Welcome to Buikwe Youth and Women Empowerment Project (BYWEP)
About Us
Buikwe Youth and Women Empowerment Project (BYWEP) is a comprehensive community development initiative dedicated to transforming lives in Uganda's Buikwe District by tackling the root causes of poverty through an integrated approach that combines skills training, education, financial inclusion, health improvement, gender equality advocacy, and critical water/sanitation access. Recognizing that 75% of youth face unemployment, 40% of girls drop out of school, and 60% of households lack clean water, BYWEP delivers market-driven vocational training in solar energy, agribusiness, and digital skills which are co-designed with local employers to ensure 80% job placement, while providing microloans and mentorship to launch sustainable businesses. Our education programs keep vulnerable youth in school through scholarships and adult literacy classes, while gender initiatives engage men and boys to shift discriminatory norms and empower women through leadership training and legal aid for land rights. Health interventions include mobile clinics offering HIV testing, maternal care, and nutrition education, now amplified by new water/sanitation projects installing boreholes, rainwater systems, and hygiene training to reduce waterborne diseases that disproportionately affect women and children. By linking clean water access to economic opportunities (e.g., freeing women's time from water collection for income-generating activities) and pairing sanitation with health programs, BYWEP creates a multiplier effect: graduates triple their incomes, 50% more women join community leadership, and entire villages gain resilience. Critically, we harness the power of sports as a catalyst for youth development - through organized football/netball leagues that promote teamwork, discipline, and self-esteem, while providing a platform for HIV prevention education, conflict resolution training, and talent identification that opens pathways to sports scholarships and careers. Projects we are focusing on

SCHOOL SUPPORT PROJECT
In Buikwe District, overcrowded and dilapidated classrooms force students to learn in unsafe conditions, some under trees or in makeshift structures. Many underprivileged youth, especially girls and orphans, drop out due to long distances to schools or lack of facilities. Without proper classrooms, quality education remains out of reach, perpetuating cycles of poverty.

CLEAN WATER PROJECT
In Buikwe District, 60% of households lack access to clean water, forcing women and children to spend hours daily fetching unsafe water from contaminated sources. This crisis fuels waterborne diseases (like cholera and dysentery), reduces school attendance, and limits economic productivity—especially for women, who bear the primary burden of water collection.

AGRICULTURE PROJECT
Buikwe District faces chronic food insecurity and low agricultural productivity, with: 70% of smallholder farmers relying on rain-fed, subsistence farming, average crop yields 40% below national potential, women producing 80% of food but owning just 10% of productive land and youth unemployment at 75% despite abundant arable land.
